GLYPHOSATE ROUNDUP

Welcome to Glyphosate - Glyphosate is a broad spectrum phosphonate produced by Monsanto (Acquired by Bayer) that is used as a herbicide and desiccant.  Commonly known as Roundup, this herbicide has gained widespread use.  By 2007, Glyphosate was the most used herbicide in United States agriculture and the second-most used in home gardening. Much like big tobacco in the legal battles betwixt tobacco companies and regulation entities before they were finally brought to heel, Monsanto spends huge sums on their efforts to lobby politicians, academics, and government institutions.  They have turned them into their accomplices covering up the harmful effects of this poison.  But with a wave of recent troubling studies coming in, and some bigger ones on the horizon, it looks like Monsanto may finally be on the ropes in this titanic struggle betwixt corporate power and public safety.  It doesn't appear crawling under the Bayer umbrella is likely to save them, either.  Various problems have been identified with use of Glyphosate.  Here are some of them.

Breakdown Of The Roundup

Glyphosate & Farmers - In tandem with the production of this chemical as a herbicide, Monsanto has developed a variety of genetically modified crops that are resistant to the substance, allowing crops to thrive while weeds are killed off.  The widespread use of these is causing problems for farmers who do not desire to use Glyphosate or GMO's.  These problems come in 2 insidious varieties.

First, because of the huge variations in the residual efficacy of the chemical based on soil conditions, rainfall and temperature, it is used far more frequently and in larger quantities than needed.  The half-life of glyphosate in soil ranges between 2 and 197 days depending largely on rainfall variables.  A farmer who wants to limit risk will apply it again toward the early range of efficacy decline rather than hoping for longer periods of protection.  However, when glyphosate reaches surface water, it is not broken down readily by water or sunlight.  As a result of overuse, runoff and other common problems during application, neighboring farms are often contaminated.  Thus killing the crops of nearby farmers who do not wish to use this poison on their land.

Second, Monsanto has bullied the legal system into taking a stance on their GMO patent that penalizes any farmer who involuntarily, through no fault of their own, has cross-pollination of a GMO that spreads into their non-GMO crops.  Since this spread of GMO's into the wild cannot be controlled, this sets up a circumstance where the only choice a farmer has if Glyphosate contaminates their land or if GMO's contaminate their seeds, is to join the crowd and officially change to GMO Glyphosate crops to avoid lawsuits.

The end result is that many farmers have been cornered into a situation where their only rational choice is to use this chemical and the GMO's that go with it.

Glyphosate & Bees - Honeybees are among the most critical factors in agriculture, and since the time of Glyphosate introduction, they have been increasingly dying off due to Colony Collapse Disorder (wiki).  While this kind of die off happens naturally based on things like long winters and other environmental stresses, a large increase in die offs commenced corollary to the widespread introduction of Glyphosate to the environment.  Via more Monsanto political/legal shenanigans, Initial testing on the effect of Glyphosate was limited to studying the effects of Glyphosate in isolated conditions rather than also investigating the effect of compounds that occur once the Glyphosate breaks down, particularly AMPA (aminomethylphosphonic acid) which is also toxic and has a half-life in soil of 958 days.  The main impact to bees, it turns out, is indirect in that glyphosate perturbs their gut microbiota, which causes the bees to become unhealthy.

Glyphosate & Wheat - There are increasing indications that the trendy digestive problem called Gluten Intolerance, may well be partially or entirely due to the use of Glyphosate as a desiccant on wheat, a process which leaves residue in many of the wheat based food products that we eat.

Glyphosate & The Gut - The importance of the fauna within our digestive tract has begun receiving increasing attention as a risk factor for numerous diseases and conditions.  Studies show that Glyphosate negatively affects friendly gut bacteria and favors the growth of harmful bacteria.  The normally beneficial bacteria species that are sensitive to Glyphosate are diminished and harmful bacteria species, such as Clostridia, which are insensitive to Glyphosate increase.

Alternatives Views and Alternatives - Skeptoid is probably the most effective proponent of continued Glyphosate use, and is not apparently in the pocket of Monsanto.  Their critical review of each of the major studies that have come out with their flurry of sensational media attention does point out legitimate flaws, overreaches and limitations in the concerns being voiced about Glyphosate.  I'll refrain from including examples of the Monsanto funded PR crud that attempts to drown out debate, though there is another legit point they make.  There is a case to be made that regulations decreasing or banning the use of Roundup might lead to starvation among the poor as yields decrease.  There is a case to be made that other entirely different solutions are needed.  My 2 cents - let's manufacture an army of robot weed pickers, what could possibly go wrong?
